Kids at the Bear Creek Recreation Complex in Orlando, Fla., are flocking to the state's first installation of Intensity, BCI Burke's new fitness play complex designed to promote fitness in children.
"We're so excited about this new playground that we really wanted to have one in Central Florida that people could come and see for themselves," said Tim Ahern, chief executive office for Burke, which provided Orange County with the Bear Creek playground as a grant. The playground's opening coincided with the company's nationwide gathering of Burke representatives in Orlando.
And based on the local reaction, the strategy seems to be working. Bear Creek supervisor Tod Melle said the playground is attracting new children to the playground.
"Almost every time I look out, I see 20 or so kids climbing and spinning on it," said Melle. "The community really jumped on this. It's really cool new stuff, and kids are just flocking to it," he said.
The grant benefited both the company and the park system, said Ahern.
"We see the Intensity playgrounds as the most important thing we've introduced in years, because the focus is on child fitness," said Ahern. "One child in three is now either overweight or becoming overweight, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Mayo Clinic reports that in the last 20 years, the percentage of overweight children has doubled."
Melle said he was impressed with the installation process as well.
"I am amazed at how quickly and smoothly it went. Everything worked just like clockwork," he said.
