GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (April 8, 2009) – Students, families, churches, civic organizations and community leaders came together by the hundreds Saturday to install a large new BCI Burke playground that in many cases would take days to complete.
But with 445 volunteers, several officials from BCI Burke and supervisors from Child’s Play Inc., the playground was ready for playing children in just a few hours. After breakfast, the volunteers formed a well-organized human machine that had the playground ready for play by 2 p.m. – with time to spare before the 3 p.m. ribbon cutting.
“It was a large project, but we got a huge response from our volunteers, who were well organized. It’s incredible to do that much work in such a short time. Also, in order to complete a community install of this size, you have to have all of the parts there, and Burke made sure that everything was there complete and on time,” said Jay Robertson, president of Child’s Play, which represents BCI Burke.
The Grand Prairie Parks and Recreation Department worked with Child’s Play Inc. to create the playground. The department coordinated Saturday’s event and volunteers, while Child’s Play oversaw the installation.
“We were amazed by the turnout. Everything went smoothly as people from all across the community helped to make this playground installation a success,” said Beverly Grogan, community events coordinator for the Parks and Recreation department.
Students at South Grand Prairie High School worked with the parks department to select the specific playground activities.
“This playground is unique because students were involved in the planning. They reviewed several different components and discussed the pros and cons of each activity. They worked within a budget and voted on the activities they wanted most,” said Tim Shinogle, park planning and development manager.
BCI Burke, with headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, is a premier manufacturer of commercial playground, park and recreation equipment and an avid supporter of playground safety and fitness. More information is available at www.bciburke.com and www.getintensity.com.
