Going Green with Burke

When people around the United States observed Earth Day for the first time on April 22, 1970, few people knew much about carbon footprints, sustainability, the ozone layer or global warming.  What a change 39 years makes! Today, it’s almost impossible to escape the very healthy national emphasis on ways to “go green.” And as Earth Day 2009 approaches (April 22), BCI Burke is devoting more energy than ever to the challenge of a sustainable future.

Here are some ways BCI Burke is going green:

  • ISO 14001:2004 Certified
  • Energy-efficient lighting
  • Wind energy from Alliant Energy's Second Nature™ Program
  • Recycled content in materials such as steel tubing, sheet steel, steel castings and paper
  • PVC that is free of lead and other hazardous heavy metals

How Can You Go Green

You’ve seen some of the things we at BCI Burke are doing to make better use of the earth’s resources and preserve the environment. Now tell us what you’re doing!

We find that when most people actually think about the changes they’ve made, they’re encouraged by how far they’ve come. At the same time, writing it down makes us all think of other ways we can “go green.” Here are a few common ideas you may have already begun or considered:

  • Switching to fluorescent ligh bulbs
  • Unplugging chargers except when necessary
  • Turning off your computers at night
  • Lowering your thermostat in winter and raising it in summer
  • Opening your car windows rather than running the air conditioner
  • Checking the air pressure in your tires
  • Getting your car tuned up to ensure better mileage
  • Riding a bicycle or motor scooter to work
  • Making short trips on foot rather than cranking the car
  • Installing solar panels
