1970sThe environment and conservation became a national issue when Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson proclaimed the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970. Recycling, anti-pollution, environmental awareness, and natural resource protection laws began to become a part of the collective consciousness. Burke was no exception, and the company responded by producing products that were made from recycled plastic.
In 1972, Burke invented Funnel Ball® which was an industry standout for its ingenuity. Other playground manufacturers quickly replicated the concept and the Funnel Ball became a playground staple across America.
The Burke factory was expanded again in 1972 to provide 20,000 square feet of additional production and warehouse space. Meanwhile, the company continued to manufacture only the highest quality playground, park and recreation equipment carrying on J.E. Burke’s motto of “Burke Better Built.” BCI Burke History 1980s
