When planning began for the playground, the Miramar Family Services Department wanted to create an exceptional playground on the east end of Mills Park that would meet the needs of both children with special needs as well as able bodied kids. They consulted with Innovative Playgrounds, the local BCI Burke representative in California, and came up with the perfect plan that would provide ample play opportunities including ramps, accessible panels, freestanding music panels, benches, tables, and trash receptacles.  Planners also emphasized the need for shade canopies to protect the children’s delicate skin from the sun, as well as safety surfacing and fencing. 

 

"The main goal was to have activities that were both educational and developmentally appropriate for a wide range of ages and ability levels.  There are even activities that allow parents and children to interact on and off the structure," says Deanna Angel, Miramar Exceptional Family Member Program Manager.

 

The quality of work Innovative provided and their desire to incorporate our vision into the design was outstanding.  They truly understood our goal and were very enthusiastic to make sure they designed a playground that met our needs," she adds.

  

The playground features a Monster Plunge, Double Rail, Quarterturn, Tsunami, Spiral and Rock ’N’ Roll slides for ample sliding fun. Competing with the slides for most fun are the Kidforce and Swift Twist Spinners. A variety of climbers to excite and challenge all ages as well as swings and freestanding panels, including musical options, complete the playground plan. Over 290 children can play safely at once. 

 

When the children and families at the grand opening played on the thrilling new playground for the first time, smiles and laughter filled Mills Park. Although there was lunch, cake, balloons, musicians, face painting and an inflatable jump house to enhance the celebration, the main attraction was clearly the playground.
