High School Relay Teams to Compete in Cycling Event in June

Tour of America's Dairyland Organizers Promote Family Fitness

Local high school students have the opportunity to promote school spirit as they compete in a special event being planned in conjunction with the Tour of America’s Dairyland (ToAD) Fond du Lac Cycling Gran Prix in downtown Fond du Lac on June 25. The high school relay race was added this year to the array of family events being planned by ToAD organizers.

Teams from Fond du Lac High School, Horace Mann High School, St. Mary’s Springs Academy, and Winnebago Lutheran Academy will be represented by 4 students each. Racers will complete a .6 mile lap and then turn over the bicycle to the next team member until all four have completed the race. Fond du Lac Cyclery will provide Trek 820 mountain bikes on race day for use by each of the teams. The high school race is scheduled to start about 5:45 p.m. following the bicycle parade and children’s races geared toward the grade school set. The winning team will be awarded a trophy.
ToAD planners are counting on parents, families, and fellow students to turn out in droves to cheer on their favorite relay team. The goal is to increase interest in bicycling and in turn promote a fun and healthy activity for families to engage in together.
“Bicycling is a life-long activity that is fun for all ages whether they’re recreational riders or racers,” said Sam Tobias, Planning & Parks Director for Fond du Lac County and ToAD planning committee member. “The more people whose interest we can spark with the ToAD events, the more we can get out using our area parks and trails to improve fitness.”
Sponsors of the Fond du Lac Gran Prix event include Agnesian HealthCare, AT&T Real Yellow Pages, BCI Burke, Commonwealth Construction Corporation, Dental Associates, Fond du Lac/Oshkosh Cyclery & Fitness, National Exchange Back & Trust and We Energies.
Planning partners include the Children's Museum of Fond du Lac, Fond du Lac Arts Council, and Fond du Lac Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The Fond du Lac Cycling Gran Prix; part of ToAD, will feature professional level races from 11:20 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. downtown. This race is part of an eleven day tour that will travel throughout Wisconsin and Illinois in June.
