After being told in 2003 that he might never race a bike again, BCI Burke Representative Jay Robertson won the “Tour of America’s Dairyland” race series in Wisconsin June 18-28. Robertson came in first in the Masters 4/5 35+ category.
“I had a crash in 2003 that punctured a lung and collapsed the other one. Doctors said I might never race in a cycling event again,” said Robertson.
Robertson drove more than 800 miles from Texas to compete in the Tour of America’s Dairyland because of the proximity to the headquarters of BCI Burke—the company he represents in North Texas and Oklahoma. The tour included nine races in 10 days across southeastern Wisconsin.
After winning one race in Waterloo and two races in Burke’s headquarters city of Fond du Lac, Robertson had accumulated enough points to be in second place going into the last race of the tour.
“My initial goal was to have a top 10 finish. After winning in Waterloo, my goal shifted because it was possible that I could win the whole event,” he said.
“Going into the final race, I was one point behind the leader. I knew that if I finished before him, then I would win the overall event in my category. We kept an eye on each other through the last race, and jockeyed for position all afternoon. On the last lap, I pulled away and won by approximately three riders,” said Robertson.
Robertson will take home prizes including a custom bike frame, a 30-pound wheel of cheese, cash, and the distinctive yellow and white cow print jersey.

After driving all the way from Flower Mound, Texas, BCI Burke representative Jay Robertson wanted to make the most of the two races he entered as part of the Tour of America’s Dairyland Tuesday and Wednesday.
As it turned out, Robertson won his category in both races – Tuesday’s Attitude Sports Fond du Lac Road Race and Wednesday’s Fond du Lac Cycling Grand Prix.
“Jay made us proud by driving more than 800 miles to compete here in BCI Burke’s headquarters city. Because we make playgrounds that help keep children fit and healthy, it’s important to set a good example for the kids we serve. Jay’s athletic excellence and commitment to cycling is an inspiration to all of us,” said Tim Ahern, chief executive officer of BCI Burke.
Robertson is president of Child’s Play, Inc., which represents BCI Burke in Texas. He competed in the Masters 4/5 35+ category in both races.
