Porters Point School

Colchester, Vermont

Years of classroom lessons about inclusive play found their perfect expression when K-2 students at Porters Point School helped design their dream playground. Student drawings and heartfelt letters — accumulated through years of studying playground equity — became the blueprint for transformation. The carefully sketched swings, spinners and climbing structures they'd imagined while learning inside now welcome them outside, with every element perfectly sized for ages 5-12.

The Volta® Inclusive Spinner anchors this student-inspired playspace, with enough room for nine kids, while the 360 Loop® provides the opportunity for all kids to play together and the Sensory Rail runs alongside primary pathways, ensuring children of all abilities can engage in tactile exploration. Musical moments emerge at the PlayEnsemble® musical instruments, where collaborative compositions replace competitive racing.

Movement and challenge take multiple forms across the playground. The Innova® Rocker and Cirrus® Swing provide both gentle and exhilarating options for different comfort levels, while the Crazy Maze Play Panel turns problem-solving into group discovery. Viper® Slides deliver the thrilling descent every playground needs, and Eko® Climbers create defined play areas while maintaining the open, inclusive atmosphere students requested.

School occupational and physical therapists validated every element for developmental benefits, ensuring this equipment supports a full spectrum of sensory and motor needs. Now this K-2 community enjoys 20-minute recesses where every child belongs, and Colchester families gather after hours to experience what student voices created.

The exclusive Burke representative partner for Vermont, Ben Shaffer Recreation, helped translate these classroom dreams into playground reality.
