International Project of Distinction

An International Project of Distinction is a play environment where everyone feels seen, secure and inspired and feels as though the space was designed for them. Thoughtful design of these spaces invites movement, connection and joy, creating a place where community comes to life. A Project of Distinction meets the criteria set forth by the Advisory Council, consisting of two BCI Burke employees and two experts in fields from psychology to play and recreation.

Design Approach

Universal design anticipates the needs of a wide range of users and brings intention to every detail. It pairs form and function to create outdoor spaces that serve people of all ages, abilities, experiences and backgrounds without adaptation. At Burke, this guides how we shape outdoor environments. Accessibility is our starting point, but our focus is inclusion and equity expressed through intuitive pathways, play variety, sensory-rich elements and features that welcome comfort, movement and connection for everyone.

We implement best practices for universal play design and carry the Principles of Universal Design through every space. Your Burke representative and design team partner with you to translate community needs into thoughtful, people-centered spaces. Together, we create environments that elevate independence, spark joy and foster a sense of belonging so time outside is truly for everyone.

How to Qualify

Step 1: You and your Burke representative will meet to discuss goals, do a site assessment and begin the design process. You can partner together to combine your goals and design needs with the expertise of the Burke team to create a space that brings more than access — it brings inclusion for people of all ages, abilities, backgrounds and preferences.

Step 2: Implement best practices for universal play design, incorporating the principles of Universal Design. Your Burke representative and design team will help guide the project.

Step 3: Working with the team, finalize the design and order your new playground.

Step 4: Your site will be recognized with a “Project of Distinction” award using standards developed and approved by the International Project of Distinction Advisory Council. Receive a Project of Distinction Sign with an explanation of the award, a QR code for tracking and a seal for your website, that tells your community and visitors that you’ve achieved this recognition.

Now, it's time to play and celebrate your project!
