This July marks the 40th anniversary of Park and Recreation Month, a time to recognize the places and people who make play possible in communities across the country. Originally launched in 1985 by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), this celebration shines a spotlight on the power of parks to bring us together, spark movement and inspire connection.
The 2025 theme, Build Together, Play Together, is a call to action – and a nod to the designers, planners and professionals who know a playground is never just a playground. It’s a space for stronger communities and healthier people.
At Burke, we believe in the power of play to move everyone of all ages and abilities – physically, emotionally and socially. That’s why we partner with parks and recreation leaders to create play environments that are inclusive, durable and built to inspire play for generations.
The Best People Behind the Places
As we celebrate Park and Recreation Month and enjoy these special places, it’s so important to remember that play doesn’t happen by accident. It takes vision, planning and a commitment to community. Park and Recreation Professionals – more than 160,000 of them – plus thousands of seasonal workers and volunteers, bring it all to life.
These important people maintain the equipment, protect the land and create spaces that are welcoming, accessible and alive with possibility.
And this month, we celebrate them. Their work. Their impact. And the spaces they’re committed to.
How We Can Celebrate In Our Communities
Celebrate National Park and Recreation Month by getting outside and connecting with your community. Whether it's exploring local parks, playgrounds or trails, joining a fitness class in the park or simply relaxing on a bench under the trees with a book, it's about creating moments that energize our bodies and inspire joy. If you want to take it a step further, support your local parks through volunteering , advocacy or community events and make the most of the places that bring us together.
However and wherever you celebrate, share your photos and stories using #BuildTogetherPlayTogether and #ParkAndRecMonth.
