When the blueprints for Sapling Grove Apartments were still fresh ink, the playground wasn't a line item to figure out later — it was part of the vision from day one. Developers at Grovewood Community Development knew that in urban Aurora, Colorado, where every square foot carries a premium, they'd need to think vertically. The result is a playspace that proves you can maximize up when you can't build out.
Nucleus® for ages 2-12 anchors the interior courtyard, protected by integrated playground shade structures that keep climbing surfaces cool even on Colorado's brightest days. For the youngest residents ages 2-5, the Level X® Launch XL adds sculptural beauty that complements the complex's modern architecture — a deliberate design choice that ties outdoor play to the building's interior aesthetic. The Comet Spinner and Cirrus® Swing deliver those can't-get-enough moments of motion for kids ages 5-12, while a dozen-plus vibrant colors burst across every surface.
It's that bold palette — along with whimsical ladybugs and caterpillars dancing across the poured-in-place surfacing — that truly sets this playspace apart. Where many apartment communities default to muted earth tones, Sapling Grove chose to make a statement. The colors and nature graphics echo the apartments' interior design themes, creating visual continuity from the living room to the courtyard.
"This grand opening is a celebration of creating homes for Aurora citizens — now and for future generations," said Jo Ellen Davidson, executive director of Grovewood Community Development, at the July 2025 ribbon cutting. "Sapling Grove demonstrates that the creation of safe, quality housing is possible through community collaboration and expertise."
That collaboration extended to every amenity, including the playground. A grant from the Colorado Health Foundation helped fund the outdoor recreation spaces and on-site wellness initiatives — recognition that play isn't a luxury but a foundation for healthy communities.
Mayor Mike Coffman captured the broader vision: "Together, we are building a more inclusive Aurora — one home, one neighbor and one legacy at a time."
A community built for Aurora's working families, Sapling Grove puts that vision into practice every afternoon in the courtyard. Nearby shade structures and seating create natural gathering spots where neighbors become friends and kids become play companions. The playground serves as common ground — literally and figuratively — for families from all walks of life.
The 81-unit first phase welcomes residents into one-, two- and three-bedroom homes with paid utilities and modern amenities. A future second phase will add 50 senior housing units, creating a multigenerational community where play connects residents across every age.
Sometimes the best playgrounds grow up, not out. At Sapling Grove, they're growing community in every direction.
