What are ESSER Funds?
The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund is a federal program, approved by the Department of Education as part of a COVID-19 aid plan. Focused on everything from keeping schools open to investing in infrastructure, ESSER Funds provide emergency financial assistance for a variety of necessary projects for school districts throughout the country.
Federal emergency aid for public education over the last year has come through three separate acts listed below. The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Fund is the main source of funding for public elementary and secondary education under each act.
- CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security) Act, March 2020
- CRRSA (Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations) Act, December 2020
- ARP (American Rescue Plan) Act, March 2021
